JWU Wins Title! DIII Nationals New England Wrap-up

DIII nationals were blast this past weekend; it was the first time since the 1930’s that a college national wrestling tournament had been held in Providence, RI. There were 22 athletes that grew up right in New England and they put on a show for their hometown crowds. Of those 22 athletes, 2 were crowned National Champions, 9 were named All-Americans, and a bunch more were knocking on the door of a top 8 finish. In addition to that, host Johnson & Wales University (JWU) whose lineup was largely made up of local New England recruits were crowned co-champions in a crazy team race that came down to the very last match! Results for every New England wrestler are below:

Coventry, RI – Coventry

4-0, 1st Place – NCAA Champion

Fry does it again, for the 3rd straight season he is the 125lb NCAA DIII National Champion. This one is even more special for two reasons: 1) He got to do it in his home state in front of his home crowd 2) His win tied the team score and helped JWU become Co-National Champions alongside Wartburg of Iowa. This is the first time in 31 years that a team other than Wartburg or Augsburg can claim to be the DIII Champion; it is also the first time in 92 years that a national title has been shared at any level of college wrestling.

Paulino’s tournament mimicked that of Ellis; he won his first two bout to make it into the quarterfinal before dropping his next two and coming up just shy of the podium. His blood round match was a rollercoaster of a bout against Chance Suddeth of Augsburg. In the first period, Paulino gave up 2 takedowns but managed two escapes and then a takedown of his own; 6-5 Suddeth going into the 2nd.
