2023 New England Showcase Roundup

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

What an amazing day Saturday was for wrestling. On November 4th, The Schwartz Report hosted its first ever showcase alongside Rhode Island College’s Veteran Classic. The eight mats were split down the middle with The Schwartz Report having four mats sectioned off to show off the talent that resides in New England. To be invited wrestlers had to have an impressive resume and go to a school that competes in the public or prep New England athletic leagues.

Quarter-Finals/Round Robin R1

The day started with one of the most highly anticipated matches on the girls’ side: Chloe Ross (RI) and Abi Alicandro (MA). It was a close one as Alicandro was able to muster up a takedown to get within two but couldn’t get that final score. The match ended for Ross 4-2.

On the boys’ side, the first round at 132lbs started off with fireworks as Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) freshman Myles Burroughs, a New Jersey youth finalist, was the first to score a takedown in his match against 2x New England Placer Joe Mahoney (CT). Mahoney, however, prevailed 5-3. At 150lbs, Top-100 freshman Jake Maddox (CT) and Cyrus Jones (MA) were locked in a back-and-forth battle. Jones led 5-4 going into the third but Maddox managed an escape to tie it up. Maddox prevailed in overtime—getting the takedown and back points for a 10-5 victory.

Consi of 4

The blood round was small but heart-stopping. Vermont Native Elias Kalat was able to work the 6-2 victory over Landan Grey (MA)—a good victory over someone who got two wins at the New England Championships last season. Sawyer Ayotte (MA) and Cyrus Jones (MA) had a great battle with Ayotte getting the takedown in overtime to win 8-6.

Semi Finals/Round Robin R2

In the girls’ division at 126lbs, Emmia Rial (CT) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against Natalia Accorsi (CT). Accorsi chose bottom and tied it with a reversal but it wasn’t enough. Rial used a big third period to get a 9-4 victory.

In one 108lb semi-final, Antoine Jackman (MA) and Robby Newton (RI) found themselves locked in a tight battle. Newton jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but by the end of the first it was 3-3 and each wrestler had a takedown and an escape. Jackman started on bottom in the second period and quickly worked his way out and scored a takedown and backpoints, taking an 8-4 lead into the final period. Newton, not deterred, used the third period to score an escape, two takedowns, and three backpoints to get a 12-9 win in one of the most thrilling matches of the showcase.

At 120lbs, New England Placer Charlie Lussier (MA) took on Mason Arborio (CT) . It was fireworks as within 10 seconds Lussier was up two and within 45 seconds Arborio was up 3-2; it looked on pace to be high-scoring—and it was. At the end of the second, Arborio had an 8-4 lead. Lussier let Arborio up at the start of the third to let the lead go up by 5 and scored 3 takedowns to be within one at an 11-10 lead. That was as close as he got; Arborio would win the match 12-10.

At 126, Seth McGrew (RI) scored a takedown with a minute left in the match to secure a 2-1 victory over Evan Boulard (ME). Trey Kaupp (CT) and Kiaben Kennedy (NH) had a great battle at 138lbs. Ultimately a takedown with 15 seconds left secured a 5-3 win for Kennedy.

At 190lbs Gino Sicari (MA) was down 4-1 against Brayden Soleau (CT) at the end of the first period. Sicari, however, rallied back to win 8-5 with a takedown in the final 10 seconds icing the win.

Raekwon Shabazz (Left) and Isaac Novod (Right) square off at the beginning of the 114 finals.

The 108 final was relatively quiet scoring-wise—that’s because both wrestlers were so technically sound. Robby Newton (RI) and Ben Fournier (CT) kept it scoreless in the first, but in the second period Newton jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an escape. Fournier, down one, chose bottom and got the escape with 22 seconds left. He followed that up with a takedown 7 seconds later to secure the 3-1 win

This was a battle between NHSCA National Champ Raekwon Shabazz (CT) and phenom freshman Isaac Novod (MA). Both are nationally renowned contenders. Shabazz jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and controlled it from there, cruising to an 8-3 win. Still, keep a lookout for Novod’s name for the next few years.

One of the most entertaining finals had to have been Mason Arborio (CT) against Emmett Logan (MA). After a scoreless first, Arborio got the escape, but Logan quickly countered with the takedown. Not too long into the third, Logan got the escape and took a 3-1 lead, but with five seconds left Arborio got the takedown. After a scoreless overtime, we were heading to the rideouts. Logan started on bottom, but Arborio was able to turn him to his back for three points, take bottom when he got his choice, and secure the win.

This was another FANTASTIC finals bout: Puerto Rican World Team Member Yandel Morales (MA) vs. New England Prep runner up Jack Dragomanos (MA). Dragomanos scored on the world qualifier initially, getting a takedown in the first. Heading into the second, he chose bottom, got out, and headed into the third with a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Pan-American silver medalist, however, was not to be counted out. Thirty seconds into the final period, Morales got the escape and fired back for a takedown almost immediately to tie it up. A scoreless overtime made this the second final to head to the tiebreakers. Morales chose bottom and after much grappling was able to secure a reversal with three seconds left, giving Dragomanos a tough two-point deficit. That was all it took.

The 138lb finals featured Anthony Basile (CT) and Brent Von-Magnus (MA). BVM got the first-period takedown and took a solid 2-0 lead heading into the second. But an escape five seconds in and a takedown 20 seconds later was all Basile needed to secure the win as he rode out Von-Magnus for the entire third period to claim a 3-2 win.

With Tyler Kadish (MA), the 2022 New England place winner, on one side and Joseph Lathwood (ME), the 2022 Hawaii State Champion, on the other, this match was bound to be great. The two exchanged attacks back and forth for the first period, but it was Kadish who got the takedown with 20 seconds to spare to go into the second period 2-0. The Newton South/NMH product elected to go bottom and halfway through the period got the escape. Then the former Moanalua High School wrestler chose bottom, but Lathwood couldn’t get the escape till the final 10 seconds. Kadish would win 3-1.

Gabe Bouyssou (RI) took the stage and the rest was history. Kyle Levesque (CT) proved to be a formidable foe, after all the two train together at Mayo Quanchi in Rhode Island. The Cornell Commit entered the second period up 6-1 after scoring a takedown and two sets of 2 near-fall points. By the end of the third it was 16-3 and Gabe Bouyssou proved why he is the #1 pound- for-pound wrestler in New England.

In a rematch of last season’s 170lb New England 3rd place match, Fisher Stites (CT) took on Joseph Bolduc (MA). Last season, Stites won the bronze medal over the Methuen wrestler 7-2; this time it was much closer. The Newtown Nighthawk got the takedown 30 seconds into the first. Bolduc was able to get the reversal later in the period but gave up the escape. Down one, Bolduc chose bottom and got the escape, tying the score heading into the final period. Twenty seconds in, Stites got the escape and that was all he needed to win the match 4-3.

Three D1 commits started in this bracket, two made it to the final. Mark Ayala (MA) is a 3x CA State Placer and Doc Buchanon Champion who’s heading to Army, and Spencer Fine (RI) is the 2x NHSCA All-American who is on his way to Columbia in the Ivy League. After a scoreless first, Ayala took bottom and just when it looked like he was about to break free from Fine, time expired. Then the Rhode Island native took bottom and got out quickly taking a 1-0 lead. Next, Ayala shot in a double, turned the corner, and scored a takedown taking a 2-1 lead with 40 seconds left. Fine quickly got out and shot in, but it didn’t work. Ayala reattacked and Fine sprawled. Just when it looked like Ayala would finish as he brought the leg up, Fine was able to stuff the shot and get the takedown.
