What is the New England Showcase?
Saturday, November 4th is going to be a great day for wrestling. The Schwartz Report is hosting its first ever invitational tournament!
The New England Showcase invites were sent to top wrestlers that compete or will compete in the NEISWA (prep league) or CNESSPA (public league). The tournament will be an eight-man, double-elimination bracket. Wrestlers are still confirmed for three matches. First four eliminated will be entered in a mini pool to determine 5th-8th, and the losers of the semi finals will wrestle for 3rd and 4th. Multiple college coaches have already confirmed their attendance, and more are invited. With that out of the way, here is the preview for 150lbs
*Pre-seeds are subject to change; seedings will be finalized after Super 32 and Journeyman.*
This weight class is sure to be a good one! The number one ranked 157 pound wrestler in New England is dropping down to take on a Nationally Ranked foe. However, what if a top-100 freshman gets there instead?
Sawyer Ayotte (Shepherd Hill, MA)
The No. 9 ranked wrestler in New England at 144lbs, Sawyer Ayotte, starts off the bracket. The Shepherd Hill wrestler placed 5th at the gauntlet that is the MIAA D1 state tournament and then 6th at the MIAA All-State Tournament. He also notched two wins at last season’s New England tournament.
Notable Wins: Henry Osmer (Winnisquam, NH), Gabe Bischoff (Greater Lowell, MA)
Colby Cloutier (King Phillip, MA)
Colby Cloutier is another Massachusetts wrestler in this bracket. Cloutier was a 5th place finisher at the MIAA All-State tournament at 160lbs and then went on to grab three wins at the New England tournament. It will be interesting to see if the senior can stay down at 150(+2).
Notable Wins: Dravyn Roberts (East Hartford, CT), Joseph Baker (Danvers, MA)
Lucas Libby (Mountain Valley, ME)
Maine’s Lucas Libby is sure to be a dark horse in this bracket. After a second-place finish in a deep Maine bracket, he went on to grab a win at the New England championships and has been hard at work this offseason.
Notable Wins: Donnell Young (Fairfield Ludlowe, CT), Alex Zeller (Piscataquis, ME)
Kyle Levesque (Xavier, CT)
Kyle Levesque, was 6th on the New England podium at 126lbs back in 2022. Last year the New England bracket did not go his way and he ran into two hammers losing 5-0 to eventual champion Hayden Myers (Coventry, RI) and then 5-2 to sophomore star James Tildsley (Shawsheen Tech, MA). Nevertheless, up in weight, Levesque looks primed to bounce back and make his mark.
Notable Wins: Matt Carrozza (Brookfield, CT), Nick D’Alessndo (Londenderry, NH)
Declan Bligh (Roxbury Latin, MA)
Coming in as the only prep wrestler in this bracket, Declan Bligh is looking to represent the NEISWA well. The Massachusetts wrestler placed 6th in a VERY tough New England prep bracket. He’s also been very active in the offseason—recently getting four wins across both freestyle and Greco at Fargo.
Notable Wins: Matt Patterson (Middleborough, MA), Spencer Boucher (Mount Anthony, VT)
Jake Maddox (Newtown, CT)
A very interesting entry here is Jake Maddox out of Newtown, CT. The young Nighthawk comes in as the No. 84 freshman in the country, according to Willie Saylor from Matscouts. And although he has yet to wrestle in a high school singlet, the 2x middle school New England Champion has already shown future competitors he isn't here to play around.
Notable WIns: Donell Young (Fairfield Ludlowe, CT) Colby Vital (Ponaganset, RI)
Drew McGourty (Braintree, MA)
No. 1 at 157lbs in New England, Drew McGourty is certainly taking on a challenge. as he is dropping down in weight and looking to challenge Rhode Island’s phenom (see below). The senior placed 3rd at last year’s tournament and has a combined 8-3 record in the 2022 and 2023 New England tournaments.
Notable Wins: David Pento Jr. (Londonderry, NH), Derek Cote (Noble, ME)
Gabe Bouyssou (Scituate, RI)`
What needs to be said about Gabe Boussou that hasn’t already been said? The Rhode Island native is ranked No. 6 in the country at 144 pounds and the No. 46 high school senior, according to Willie Saylor from MatScouts. Earlier in the summer, Bouyssou came away with two Pan-American medals: a silver in freestyle and a bronze in Greco-Roman.
Notable Wins: Teghan McConnell (Bedford, NH), Elliot Humphries (Minnechaug-NMH, MA)
